The transport sector is failing to meet climate targets. The Federal Environment Agency has examined what effect it would have if we promoted climate protection now – and what would happen if we waited until the next legislative period.
The balance sheet speaks volumes. The German transport sector emitted almost 146 million tonnes of CO₂ in 2023. That is around 13 million tonnes more than would actually have been permitted under the Climate Protection Act. This means that the sector of Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) is once again tearing up the climate targets. Which isn’t particularly dramatic at the moment, at least not on paper – because overall, Germany will achieve its climate goals in 2023. And according to the “projection report” from the Federal Environment Agency, the 2030 target is also within reach.
