Climate-friendly hydrogen from Africa remains just a dream for the time being

Hydrogen is considered the energy carrier of the future. There are also natural deposits around the world, and a company has started mining in Mali. But transport and storage are expensive.

Hydrogen is considered the most important energy carrier of the future. It burns cleanly to form water and does not produce any climate-damaging CO2 and can be used in many ways. Entire branches of industry want to switch to hydrogen in order to improve their climate balance sheets and finally get away from natural gas that comes from despotic states or is pressed from rock by environmentally harmful fracking. For years, German federal governments have been propagating and trying to promote hydrogen technology with initiatives. But there is a big catch. So far there has been far too little hydrogen to even come close to supplying industrial production, mobility and other areas.
