This time-lapse video shows how fast global warming is advancing.
The warm temperatures are melting Iceland’s glaciers – and quite quickly.
Within six weeks, the Breidamerkurjökull glacier tongue in the south-east of the country shrank sharply.

The glacier tongue belongs to Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Iceland.
Until the end of the 19th century, Breidamerkurjökull reached the sea – now it is more than three kilometers from the coast.
The time-lapse was created by Dr. Kieran Baxter, who is a senior lecturer at Dundee University.
Together with colleagues, he wants to draw attention to the amazing speed at which the centuries-old ice is melting.
Since 1989 Vatnajökull has lost 150 to 200 cubic kilometers of ice.
According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the area has been reduced by more than 400 square kilometers.
This is roughly four times the area of the island of Sylt.
In 2019, an Icelandic glacier completely disappeared: Okjökull in the west of the island.
The recordings make it very clear what a strong impact climate change is having.
