“The end of coal is in sight,” announces the website of the “Powering Past Coal Alliance” (PPCA) quite solemnly. Launched at the climate conference in Bonn in 2017, Verbund aims to end the use of lignite and hard coal as quickly as possible in order to achieve global climate targets. 48 countries have already joined the alliance, with Germany joining in 2019. So far, however, there can be no question of an end to coal.
