Germany’s top civil protection advises not to live everywhere in the country. Some areas are threatened by climate change and storms. BBK boss Tiesler also calls for a new awareness of the crisis.
War against Ukraine, Corona summer wave, inflation and general worries about the future: there is certainly no lack of crises at the moment. In addition, there is now an alarming warning from the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK).
“As a civil protection advocate, I say that some areas should not be resettled due to climate change and the acute threat of storms and floods. This question also arises on the coasts,” said Ralph Tiesler, President of the BBK, to the newspapers of the Funke media group.
BBK boss calls for crisis awareness
He does not rule out that there could be climate refugees within Germany in the future. “It is not possible to say today whether people actually have to flee from individual regions of Germany to other parts of the country.” There is no place in Germany where you don’t have to take a close look.
He spoke of an accumulation of crises. “What is certain is that we live in uncertain times.” This is one of the reasons why the head of the authority pleaded for a new awareness of the crisis among the population. “The crisis mode must now be part of general awareness, we must learn that the crisis is part of everyday life,” said Tiesler.
In Germany, civil protection is the responsibility of the federal states. The federal government takes care of precautions for civil protection in the event of war. He can support the federal states and municipalities in the event of a disaster on request.
Cabinet discusses “resilience strategy”
The federal government is also dealing with the issue. Today the cabinet is discussing a “resilience strategy”. The aim of the guidelines laid down therein is “to protect people and their livelihoods and to strengthen the community’s resilience and adaptability to disasters,” quoted the dpa news agency from the template.
Existing structures and systems should be supplemented or linked with new or improved disaster risk management measures. Non-governmental actors should also be involved, such as the aid organizations, which are primarily based on volunteer commitments.
The strategy not only focuses on Germany, but also looks at development policy contributions to resilience in other parts of the world.
“Iosif” brings a lot of heat
Germany is very acutely facing a new heat wave. The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts highs of up to 34 degrees Celsius for today and tomorrow in the southwest of the country.
In other parts of the country, too, the high “Iosif” causes sweating. Highs of between 25 and 31 degrees are predicted. According to the forecasts, it will only be on the coasts that it will not be quite as warm on Wednesday with 19 to 24 degrees.
The weekend will bring cooling in the north before the heat from France dares to start the new week again, according to the DWD.
