Climate activists of the “Last Generation” protest on the Warsaw Bridge

Climate activists of the so-called “Last Generation” tried to block the Warsaw Bridge in Berlin-Friedrichshain on Saturday afternoon. According to police there were around 125 demonstrators. The activists repeatedly stood and sat on the street. The approximately 220 officers deployed carried the demonstrators away, surrounded participants and established their identities. The accusation: coercion, also because no meeting was announced and later, when the police tipped it off, none was registered. Rbb reporters described the mood as sometimes very aggressive.

At the beginning of the week, the activists announced protests in ten German cities for this Saturday – but with a new strategy. Instead of sticking to streets, they want to block traffic through so-called disobedience meetings. “We will stay until something happens, otherwise we will come again and again and again,” said Raphael Thelen, spokesman for the “Last Generation”. By Saturday evening, some demonstrators had been expelled from the square and some had been arrested. There were no longer any major blockades.
