Claudia Pechstein at the CDU: Bad idea – opinion

With her appearance at the party in uniform, the Olympic champion probably wanted to send a signal to the conservatives. But Friedrich Merz in particular should know that she was not doing the police any favors.

Friedrich Merz says it’s the content that counts, not the outward appearance. This fine attitude in itself was pushed to its limits this weekend. Since Merz’ CDU discussed at a convention about their basic program and what they want to stand for in the future. An impulse came from Claudia Pechstein, five-time Olympic champion in speed skating and officially sports-sponsored federal police officer in her main job. Pechstein explained, among other things, that rejected asylum seekers would have to be deported, that discussions about non-discriminatory names for schnitzel dishes are – roughly speaking – of no interest to pigs, and that the traditional family (“mum and dad”) deserves more attention. “Brilliant” in terms of content, Friedrich Merz praised afterwards in the ZDF program “Berlin direkt”.
