The smell of powder. It still envelops part of the Vand’Est district in Vandoeuvre-lès-Nancy, on this Thursday morning. At the foot of the buildings in the rue de Hollande – the main scene of nocturnal clashes between young Vandoper residents and the police – the city sweepers are trying to erase the scars of anger.

The ground is still strewn with DPR casings, a “delayed propulsion device” used by the police and which allows tear gas canisters to be fired at 50, 100 or 200 meters using the Cougar launcher. The smell of gunpowder… The State DPRs rub shoulders with the tubes of firework mortars set off by young people from the neighborhood and which lit up the Vandoper night between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.
