The Nuremberg City Council has decided to demolish the listed racecourse in the Reichelsdorf district. The urban planning committee spoke out against the preservation of the state office for the preservation of monuments unique facility which was used for both motorcycle and track racing. The track is considered to be dilapidated, economically difficult to rehabilitate and hardly suitable for sporting purposes. In 2016, the “Sportplatz Nürnberg 1903” club decided to sell it to a private investor. He wants to build apartments and a day care center there, around 220 residential units are planned. According to the city, the railway, built in 1904, was only “recognized as a monument late in the process by the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments”. It was decided not to demolish only part of the track. The plan is to keep 30 of the original 400 meters as an “art and memorial object”. An initiative had recently fought for the system. Monument preservationists recently came to the conclusion that the railway is a technical, urban and sports historical monument. The majority in the city council was clear, only one city council voted against the demolition.
