In the state elections in Bremen, the ruling SPD could achieve its goal of becoming the strongest force again. According to an initial forecast, the Social Democrats will have at least 28 percent, the CDU will do slightly worse. The Greens are therefore roughly on their result of the last polls, where they were 13 percent. The same applies to the left, which was predicted to be about eleven percent.
Meanwhile, the FDP has to worry. According to the forecasts, the MPs from Bremerhaven will make it into the citizenship. However, it is currently not certain whether the MPs from Bremen, the other and much larger constituency, will also be able to do this. The right-wing populist party “Citizens in Anger” could therefore get around ten to eleven percent of the vote. It should benefit from the fact that the AfD was not admitted to the state elections. After internal disputes, the AfD had submitted two competing election lists, neither of which were allowed to vote.
More than 462,000 Bremen residents were able to vote in the general election. Unlike in the other federal states, the state parliament is elected every four years. In the last election in 2019, the CDU became the strongest party for the first time in the post-war period. But because the Greens preferred to form a coalition with the SPD and the Left, the Christian Democrats had to join the opposition – and SPD man Andreas Bovenschulte became head of a red-red-green coalition.
Many peculiarities in Bremen’s electoral system make counting tedious. Therefore, according to the prognosis on the evening of election Sunday, the state returning authority only publishes an official extrapolation for the citizenry, based on 95 voting districts. According to all experience, however, this extrapolation is close to the provisional official final result, which is determined a few days later after a complete count.
