“Cities Skylines 2”: Developer has to postpone the DLCs

The development studio Colossal Order has postponed the DLC packages for its building strategy game “Cities Skylines 2”. The first asset pack is no longer scheduled to appear in 2023 as planned, the studio writes in a blog entry. Later DLCs will also be delayed until Colossal Order gets the game’s technical problems under control.

“Cities: Skylines 2” came onto the market in poor technical condition and only runs at a low frame rate even on current high-end systems. The studio had adjusted its community to this shortly before the release. “Although our team has worked tirelessly to deliver the best possible experience, we have not achieved the benchmark we were aiming for,” wrote the studio.

In her new blog entry The developers are now addressing planned improvements. The highest priority is the implementation of LOD models. “LOD” stands for “Level of Detail”. In games like “Cities Skylines 2,” different detailed models, such as houses, are shown depending on the zoom level. This saves performance when users zoom out far. In “Skylines 2” these less detailed LOD models are currently partially missing, which eats up a lot of GPU performance. Colossal Order now wants to deliver them in several patches.

Colossal Order then wants to improve CPU performance, i.e. minimize stuttering and smooth the simulation. This is particularly noticeable in longer games with larger cities. At the same time, bugs and glitches should be addressed. Currently, a hundred of them have already been verified, and another 100 are still being examined.

Only after these changes have been made will we focus on the DLCs. “I apologize for the delay, but we can’t rush new content before the foundation has been laid. This also applies to the content creator packs and the radio stations,” writes one developer.

Meanwhile, the mood in the community is bad. Many are disappointed with Colossal Order, which earned a good reputation with the first part. Only 57 percent of buyers recommend “Cities Skylines 2” on Steam.
