After the search of former US President Trump’s property, the FBI chief complained about threats against the US federal police. A fatal incident occurred at a field office in Cincinnati.
A gunman has been shot dead by officers after an attack on an FBI office in the United States. According to the FBI, the man wanted to break into the office in Cincinnati, Ohio. “After an alarm was activated and armed FBI agents intervened, the individual fled,” it said. According to media reports, the man fired a nail gun and displayed a semi-automatic rifle before escaping in a car.
According to the police, a chase ensued, and the suspect then stopped in a rural area. “As the vehicle came to a standstill, there was an exchange of fire between officers at the scene and the suspect,” said a police spokesman. Police officers tried to get the man to give up, but he refused. When he pointed a gun at the police officers, the officers shot him, the police spokesman said. “He succumbed to his injuries on the spot.”
Background of the attack still unclear
The exact background of the attack on the FBI office was initially unclear. The incident came just days after the FBI raided former US President Donald Trump’s mansion in Florida. The search of the Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach had caused anger and outrage in right-wing circles. Trump himself described the raid as politically motivated.
According to police sources, US media reported that the armed FBI intruder was said to have been in Washington in the days before the US Capitol was stormed on January 6, 2021. He could also have been there on the day of the attack on the Capitol, it said. Investigators are now checking whether the 42-year-old could have maintained contacts with right-wing extremist groups such as the Proud Boys.
Threats against FBI after raid
FBI chief Christopher Wray recently complained about threats against the federal police in connection with the raid and described them as reprehensible and dangerous. “Violence against law enforcement is not the answer no matter who you’re mad at,” Wray said. Attorney General Merrick Garland said he “personally authorized” the search.
Authorities did not give a reason for the search of Trump’s home Monday night.
