As the brilliant scientist in “Oppenheimer”, Cillian Murphy had to smoke a lot of fake cigarettes – just like in his previous starring role in “Peaky Blinders”. The actor therefore has health concerns.

“Oppenheimer” will be in cinemas next week. Director Christopher Nolan’s new film is being eagerly awaited, with only a trailer known yet – but if lead actor Cillian Murphy is to be believed, there will be a lot of smoking on screen.

In the blockbuster, Murphy plays Robert Oppenheimer, “father of the atomic bomb” and scientific director of the “Manhattan Project” – and notorious chain smoker. In order to portray this trait of Oppenheimer’s personality in the film, Murphy had to smoke almost continuously on set, he told The Guardian. Even if they were only artificial cigarettes, this made the actor decide: his next role should not be a smoker.

Already for “Peaky Blinders” Cillian Murphy had to smoke a lot

Oppenheimer always switched between “cigarettes and pipes,” says the 47-year-old: “That killed him in the end.” The scientist died of throat cancer in 1967 at the age of 62. Cillian Murphy has health concerns about his role — especially since he previously played a chain smoker for six seasons on Peaky Blinders.

“I smoked so many fake cigarettes for ‘Peaky Blinders’ and now this. My next role will not be a smoker. That can’t be good for you. Even herbal cigarettes now have health warnings,” the actor said in the Guardian – Interview. The cigarettes were possibly even the lesser evil: Murphy also had to lose a lot of weight for the role as Oppenheimer. However, he does not want to reveal how many kilograms he has lost. But he could not “recommend” it.
