Church window by Markus Lüpertz inaugurated in Hanover – Culture

It was a delicate balancing act of saving face that could be observed at the Reformation service on Tuesday in the Marktkirche in Hanover. On the 490th anniversary of the Protestant confession in Hanover, the controversial 13 meter high new church window by Markus Lüpertz was inaugurated. And on this occasion there was an elephant in the room that everyone had to deal with. In 2017, Gerhard Schröder wanted to donate a work by his close friend Markus to the main church in his hometown, which the community initially gladly accepted. But when Schröder failed to distance himself from his other friend, Vladimir Putin, and his war crimes after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the church wanted to return the Danaan gift.
