An expected decision. Meeting in a general assembly in Lourdes, the leaders of the Conference of Religious Men and Women of France (Corref) voted “unanimously” the creation of a “independent commission of recognition and reparation” for victims of child crime, its president, Véronique Margron, told AFP on Friday, November 19.

This commission will be a separate structure from the Independent National Authority for Recognition and Reparation (Inirr) announced in early November by the bishops of France. She will have for primary mission to recognize the word of the victim and, according to his wish, to “mediate” between the victim and the congregation concerned. According to Véronique Margron, “the art of this commission will be to obtain a consensus” between the two parties.

The 300 or so officials of Corref, which represents the monks, nuns, brothers and sisters of the Church, also voted to create a subsidiary endowment fund. “for the moment funded to the tune of 500,000 euros”. It will be used when the religious institute no longer exists or when it is notoriously insolvent, said Véronique Margron.
