This news comes as a shock to the football world in Germany.

Master trainer Christoph Daum (68, 1992 with VfB Stuttgart) has cancer. The long-standing Bundesliga coach announced this himself on Instagram on Friday morning.

Daum writes: “Hello dear football fans, I would like to address you today with a very personal message: Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from the public in the last few months because I received a cancer diagnosis as part of a routine examination.”

He further explains: “Since then I have been with Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wolf and the team at CIO Cologne are in the best of hands and I am glad that the treatment is working very well for me!”.

Zwickau, who last worked for Romania as national coach, also writes: “You know me: I’m a fighter and will also tackle this challenge optimistically and with all my strength. Therefore I ask to respect that I need privacy now to get well as soon as possible. I am happy about your positive news and thank you for your support.”

He ends his message with an appeal: “I can only advise you all: Go to cancer screening in good time! Sincerely, your Christoph Daum”.

Daum’s greatest success was the German championship in 1992 with VfB Stuttgart. He was coach there from 1990 to 1993. His first stop was 1. FC Köln, for which he was responsible from 1986 to 1990.

He then took over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1996 after an interlude at Besiktas Istanbul (1994 to 1996). He stayed there until 2000, before the probably worst time of his coaching career followed. On October 21, 2000, Daum tested positive for cocaine, prompting him to resign from his position at Leverkusen. He was actually supposed to become national coach in 2001, but that never happened because of the cocaine affair.

In 2001 he became coach again at Besiktas before returning to the Bundesliga in 2006 after further stints at Austria Wien and Fenerbahce. He coached 1. FC Köln again until 2009. This was followed again by Fenerbahce before he last played in the Bundesliga in 2011, but was relegated with Eintracht Frankfurt.

He then took over at Club Brugge, but moved to Turkey again in 2013, this time to Bursaspor. Most recently, he coached the Romanian national team from 2016 to 2017, since then Daum has not been active as a coach.

Now he is probably facing the biggest challenge of his career.
