Anyone who needs groceries quickly at Christmas will have to spend a long time searching for open shops. These opening times apply to Rewe, Aldi and Co.

Munich – Many consumers know it: On Christmas Eve, the meal is prepared for the Christmas holidays and suddenly an ingredient is missing. However, only a few shops are open on Christmas Day. And this Christmas there’s another thing that makes shopping on December 24th more difficult.

Shopping at Christmas: Supermarkets in the north are allowed to open

Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday in 2023, much to the chagrin of some people. Because: This day is traditionally used to get groceries or the last gifts for the next three days of Christmas. Supermarkets, discounters and shops can prepare for a large number of customers as early as December 23rd. But some shops are also open on Christmas Eve. However, the majority of the shops remain closed.

Rewe, Lidl, Kaufland, Edeka and Aldi commented before the holidays on whether customers could shop with them over Christmas. There will not be the familiar opening times until 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve; instead, customers will have to concentrate on special locations such as train stations, airports and busy shopping streets. In Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony, supermarkets have an advantage: due to the spa rule, they are also allowed to open on Christmas Eve. “This [Regel] “Basically enables retailers in tourist regions to open on Sundays,” writes Aldi north.

In contrast to some stores in the north, Aldi Süd branches will not open on Christmas Eve and will remain closed for three days. The same applies to Kaufland nationwide: “Our Kaufland branches will not be open on December 24th this year so that our employees can celebrate Christmas Eve in peace with their families and friends after a week of intensive sales,” it says.

Rewe in particular will open the doors: many of the branches are located in train stations, airports or Aral gas stations. Rewe to Go branches will be open there for at least a few hours, so customers should still hurry. Lidl and Edeka may also have some branches that are open for a few hours at Christmas, but only in special locations or very busy pedestrian zones. According to supermarkets, customers can find out which branches are open on notices in the relevant stores. (approx)
