Christine Westermann reads: “Beacon” by Dani Shapiro

Presenter, journalist and author Christine Westermann loves books. Here she presents her new discoveries every two weeks. This week’s “Beacon” by Dani Shapiro.

What is worth waiting for? That could be the secret why this novel was a mega-seller in the USA and won multiple awards. For almost 15 years, the unfinished manuscript of Beacon lay in a closet somewhere, hidden among all sorts of other junk.

In the meantime, author Dani Shapiro had written other successful books and started a popular podcast in which people dare to reveal a family secret. While tidying up, she found the loose manuscript leaves, read them and was surprised. Also about herself, she says in an interview. The plot was good, but she was too busy to implement it cleverly at the time. She has done that now.
