Christiane Taubira supports the Popular Primary, “last chance of union” for the left

The possible left-wing presidential candidate Christiane Taubira supported the Popular Primary on Saturday, seeing it as the “last space to build the union” of the left in which she intends to participate.

After announcing the day before “considering” being a presidential candidate in 2022, the former Minister of Justice under the socialist presidency of François Hollande declared that he wanted to give himself “the time necessary to ensure that we (the left) may seize this last chance of union ”.

“The last space where this union can be built”

Asked in her first “campaign trip” on the proposed debate launched by the socialist candidate Anne Hidalgo within the framework of the Popular Primary, Christiane Taubira said she wanted “to continue to move forward with determination while respecting each and everyone”.

“There is the Popular Primary which seems the last space where this union can be built,” she said. “I have already said aloud several times how good I feel about this democratic and generational process. Its founders built the credibility of the process. They gave it autonomy, ”she added. For her, “it is precisely up to its founders to specify the rules. It does seem to be the last space where this union can be built ”.

Voting scheduled for January 27 to 30

Christiane Taubira is one of the 10 candidates selected by the Popular Primary, from a collective aimed at linking the aspirations of civil society and left-wing parties. The rebellious candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon and that of environmentalists Yannick Jadot refused to participate. The People’s Primary vote is scheduled for January 27-30. Almost 300,000 people have already signed up to participate.

The radical left-wing party, whose colors Christiane Taubira wore in the 2002 presidential election where she won 2.32% of the vote in the first round, “voted unanimously in support” of the one he already sees as a candidate. “The rallying path that she opens with a candidacy above the parties, by speaking first of France, by addressing herself directly to French women and men, to voters on the left, is an expected act, lucid and responsible, ”said the PRG in a press release.
