Cannabis legalization was one of the major issues in the coalition negotiations. Then reality intervened: the Ukraine war shifted priorities. Now Christian Lindner gives all consumers hope – with a curious formulation.

For young voters, the legalization of cannabis was an important issue in the 2021 federal election. The Greens have traditionally advocated the legalization of the soft drug, and finally the FDP and SPD also signaled approval.

The fact that hemp should be legalized as an intoxicant is even stated in the coalition agreement and should therefore be implemented in the current government period. So far, however, nothing has changed in the first few months of the new government: other topics such as inflation or the war in Ukraine have dominated the news and government activities.

Christian Lindner: “When will Bubatz be legal?”

Now Finance Minister Christian Lindner commented on Twitter. Lindner promises that legalization should take place “soon” – with a curious wording. He begins his tweet with the question “When will Bubatz be legal?”, a meme that has become increasingly popular in recent months. Bubatz is a slang term for a joint, i.e. a cigarette containing cannabis.

The information from Christian Lindner was also confirmed elsewhere. The federal drug commissioner Burkhard Blienert said that he would start “a thorough consultation process” together with the Ministry of Health and other departments. “It’s about pooling knowledge and experience, but also about addressing objections and reservations very openly,” said the SPD politician to the German Press Agency.

Accordingly, technical preparations are to begin for the planned controlled release of cannabis in Germany. The federal states, municipalities, associations, science and civil society should also be involved in the further preparations.
