Chips still in short supply – economy

According to the digital association Bitkom, the shortage of semiconductors has partly worsened in recent years. In a survey, 89 percent of the companies surveyed that buy semiconductor parts or components reported difficulties in procurement, the association announced on Tuesday. “That’s another eight percentage points more than in 2021.” Problems include delivery delays, price increases, limited delivery quantities and unavailable parts. “The average delivery delay for semiconductor components in Germany is currently around five months.” Two years ago, however, it was six and a half months. 404 companies with 20 or more employees from the manufacturing sector and the IT and communications sectors were surveyed. These require a particularly large number of chips. 68 percent of companies said they expected increasing delivery delays in 2024. 19 percent expect no change, ten percent expect an improvement. “Without chips, nothing works in the German economy,” said Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst. “Germany and Europe must end one-sided dependencies on semiconductors.” Asia – especially China, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore – and the USA dominate as production locations. The EU has set itself the goal of doubling its global market share of production to 20 percent by 2030.
