Corona cases have occurred again in China’s 13 million city of Xi’an. The authorities are therefore imposing a lockdown for the second time. Schools, shops and restaurants are to remain closed for a week.

Due to an impending increase in infections, a rigorous lockdown has again been imposed on a metropolis in China. The city of Xi’an, with its 13 million inhabitants, is hit again. According to the city administration, shops, schools and restaurants will remain closed for a week from Wednesday.

18 infections since Saturday

Society should calm down as much as possible, reduce mobility and lower the risk of infection, it said. According to the authorities, 18 infections with the omicron variant have been registered in Xi’an since Saturday.

The metropolis in the north of the People’s Republic had already been put under a drastic lockdown at the end of last year. Public life in the city was completely paralyzed for a month. At that time, thousands of corona cases were registered.

Lockdowns and mass testing

China is still pursuing a strict zero-Covid strategy, with individual outbreaks being dealt with immediately through lockdowns and mass testing. The Chinese economy is only just recovering from the effects of a month-long lockdown in Shanghai and strict corona restrictions in the capital Beijing.
