The regime in Beijing is suddenly very nice to the Europeans again. It knows that many people, especially in business, like flexible promises – and will certainly deliver them at the Munich Security Conference.

There is some good news to report regarding European perceptions of China. One of them: China’s strongman Xi Jinping has dismantled the myth of the wise dictatorship, which is sometimes also popular in the West, which is said to be superior to democracies in terms of efficiency. The years of increasingly irrational zero-Covid policy and the ideologically motivated patronage of the private sector left the impression that someone is tripping themselves.
