Did the new coronavirus variant come into the country in the mail? Media in China are reporting that packages sent from abroad may have spread the Omicron variant in Beijing and elsewhere. Recipients should now take protective measures.

Chinese state television has warned against mail and purchases from abroad due to the spread of the corona virus. “Minimize the purchase of overseas goods from countries with a high incidence,” state broadcaster CCTV wrote in a guide published Monday on its website.

If parcels are received from abroad, comprehensive protective measures are recommended. When receiving shipments, it makes sense to wear disposable gloves and a protective mask. A safe distance from the courier should also be maintained. In addition, packages should ideally be opened and disinfected outdoors.

China: Beijing reported the first omicron case over the weekend

CCTV released its recommendations after the Chinese capital Beijing reported its first omicron case over the weekend. The infected had previously received mail from Canada, state media said. A sample of the mail had tested positive for omicron.

In the past, imported goods such as frozen meat or fruit were repeatedly blamed for infections in China, which is pursuing a strict zero-corona strategy. However, international experts doubt whether contagion is possible by touching sent packages or products. After the recent infection in Beijing, the state postal service called on the entire industry to strictly follow disease prevention measures.
