China confines the 17 million inhabitants of the city of Shenzhen

The 17 million inhabitants of the city of Shenzhen, in southern China, have been placed in confinement after the reporting of 66 new cases of coronavirus, announced the local government, which also sealed off the business district.

The city, home to tech giants such as Huawei and Tencent, has asked residents to stay at home amid a spike in Omicron cases, after already closing non-essential venues and banning restaurants in recent days.

China recorded 3,393 cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, according to official data, a record since the start of the epidemic in 2020.

Due to a spike in cases across the country, authorities have closed schools in Shanghai and locked down several northeastern cities, while more than ten provinces are racing to contain local outbreaks.
