The chimpanzees surrounded the female gorilla and her baby. They barked and screamed and shook branches menacingly. The mother held her baby tightly in front of her stomach and tried to keep the attackers at a distance. The baby screamed. One of the male chimpanzees, Thea, kept trying to grab the child, but couldn’t. Another, Gump, finally managed to pull the baby away from the mother, but the mother pulled her child back to her. Shortly afterwards, the two gorillas were able to flee. The chimpanzees let them go and turned to another victim, who got away with not just a fright.
