Children’s novel “Grass under my feet”: War as a savior – culture

Ada is not allowed to leave the house. Never. She is ten years old and only knows the shabby room where she lives with her mother and brother; she is usually alone there. She’s allowed to sit at the window, just that, but woe betide her if she tries to talk to someone on the street. Then the mother strikes – or forces her into a cubby under the sink where the cockroaches scurry over her.
