In addition to child benefit, children from low-income families can also receive a child allowance. So far that’s a maximum of 250 euros per month. Because of high inflation, the maximum amount will increase significantly in the new year.

Due to high inflation, the maximum child allowance increases to 292 euros. This was announced by Family Minister Lisa Paus. “Low-income families who receive the maximum amount will then have a total of up to 542 euros per month available for their child together with child benefit,” calculated the Green politician in the “Augsburger Allgemeine”.

So far, the maximum amount is 250 euros per month per child, but the adjustment will apply from next year. Families with low incomes receive the state benefit; it is paid out in addition to child benefit and, if applicable, housing benefit. How high the child allowance is depends on your individual living circumstances. According to the Federal Employment Agency, families who already receive the child allowance do not have to take action to receive more money. You can also check on the authority’s website whether you are entitled to the child allowance.

Child allowance should be part of the Basic child protection become

In the future, the child allowance should be absorbed into the basic child benefit. According to the Federal Government’s will, from 2025 this should combine benefits for families such as child benefit, child allowance and other support from citizens’ benefit for children. Families should be able to apply digitally. The law is currently undergoing parliamentary proceedings. An introduction is planned from January 1, 2025.

From the perspective of the Federal Employment Agency, a start is not possible until the beginning of July 2025 at the earliest for financial, technical and organizational reasons. The federal states also reject parts of the reform for fear of duplicate structures in administration. The law introducing basic child security requires approval in the state chamber.
