Chemnitz: host of the Mangal in court – politics

from

Antonie Rietzschel, Chemnitz

In autumn 2018 Ali T. is standing in his restaurant in Chemnitz – or what is left of it. With his cell phone he films the sooty walls of the Mangal, the burst chair cushions, the charred reservation book. A fire destroyed everything – Ali T. is convinced: neo-Nazis must have started the fire. There is a solidarity rally in the city, the then mayor Barbara Ludwig comes to visit several times. Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has his picture taken with Ali T. in front of the shattered glass door. The landlord meets the former Chancellor Angela Merkel.
