Chemical Park Gendorf plans huge biomass power plant in Burgkirchen – Bavaria

In order to make at least a step forward on the long road to climate-neutral production, the Gendorf Chemical Park in Burgkirchen, Upper Bavaria, wants to build a huge biomass thermal power station together with the Eon Group in the coming years. With fresh wood leftovers from the regional forestry, this is primarily intended to generate hot steam for industrial processes and also an amount of electricity that would theoretically be enough for 40,000 households. “For the foreseeable future, a climate-neutral, stable and economical supply of steam will only be possible with biomass,” said Christoph von Reden, managing director of the chemical park operator InfraServ.

Industry in the Bavarian chemical triangle around Burghausen and Burgkirchen consumes enormous amounts of energy and is fighting for a CO₂-free future under increasing pressure. The Gendorf biomass power plant is intended to replace at least half of a gas turbine power plant on the site, which would mean that the chemical park’s CO₂ emissions would be almost halved by around 96,000 tons per year.
