For a proud sum: The counter from the cult series “Cheers” was auctioned off.

From 1982 to 1993, the characters from “Cheers” sat at the counter of the bar of the same name in Boston and talked about everything and everything. Now the counter from the cult series has been auctioned off for a large sum. According to US media An unnamed buyer paid $675,000 for the prop.

The center piece from the production set for “Cheers” was the most expensive item to find a buyer at the Dallas auction. Heritage Auctions organized the auction of props, costumes and sets owned by James Comisar. He had collected memorabilia from series over the years and is now dissolving his collection.

The auction brought in a total of five million US dollars. Among the most expensive memorabilia after the “Cheers” bar were the costumes of Batman and Robin from the 1960s series for $615,000 and the set of Johnny Carson’s (1925-2005) “Tonight Show” ($275,000).

“Cheers”: Style-defining sitcom

“Cheers” is one of the most popular and influential sitcoms in TV history – although it almost got canceled after the first season. She was style-defining for numerous modern successors such as “Friends” or “How I Met Your Mother”. The offshoot “Frasier” also became a cult series.

During the 1990-1991 TV season, “Cheers” was the most watched regular TV show in the United States. The last episode of May 20, 1993 is one of the programs with the most viewers ever. The series finale had a 45.5 percent rating.

“Cheers” was a springboard for many stars. Ted Danson (75) embodied the bar owner Sam Malone, Woody Harrelson (61) the simple-minded bartender Woody. Kirstie Alley (1951-2022) had her breakthrough role as waitress Rebecca.

Incidentally, in Germany, “Cheers” ran briefly in 1985 with a freely synchronized version entitled “Prost Helmut”. Only ten years later did the series appear on television in a faithful translation.
