Check-in at events or in restaurants should become easier: After an update, the Corona warning app can now also scan QR codes that were created for the Luca app. But it doesn’t work the other way around.
The official corona warning app of the federal government has expanded its check-in function, with which, above all, high-risk encounters between people indoors are to be better recorded. To check in, the application can now also read in the QR codes that were created for the Luca app. Organizers only need to generate a QR code for the different apps. No data flows into the Luca system.
Apps follow different concepts
The Corona-Warn-App (CWA) and the Luca-App pursue two different concepts to contain the infection rates: The CWA registers anonymized persons who have been at a distance of two meters or less for a long time as risk contacts. With the Luca app, secure contact data of the visitors are recorded, which are made available to the health department if necessary.
When checking in with the CWA in closed rooms, it is taken into account that the aerosols there also move over greater distances. In addition, air particles exhaled by infected people are still present in dangerous concentrations for a while after they have already left the room.
Organizers and restaurateurs can generate a QR code in the CWA for check-in; however, you can also use the block graphics from the Luca system.
With the Luca app, visitors have to provide their contact details.

Luca cannot scan the warning app codes
Apps like Luca are primarily intended to digitally implement the mandatory recording of people in restaurants, shops or events so that there is no mess of paper. Visitors have to provide their contact details.
As long as the infection protection regulations of the federal states require the collection of personal data, the Corona warning app cannot take on this task. It is not possible to scan QR codes generated with the CWA with the Luca app.
In May, however, Saxony was the first federal state to make it possible to use the CWA for legally binding contact tracking.
Warning app downloaded 35.8 million times
According to the RKI, the Corona warning app has now been downloaded 35.8 million times. According to the operator, the Luca app now has 36 million registered people in Germany.
