Schalke 04 have reached an agreement with Thomas Reis. The former coach of VfL Bochum takes over as coach in Gelsenkirchen. Schalke announced this on Thursday (October 27th, 2022).

The ex-Bochumer Reis, with whom Schalke is said to have spoken last summer, now has the task of leading the “Royal Blues” to stay up in the league. The sports show had already reported on Wednesday evening. Schalke also officially announced the commitment on Thursday morning.

“Courage is one of my values. I can assess the risk well. It also makes the task interesting,” says Reis. “I simply fit into the Ruhr area.” Thomas Reis had previously coached VfL Bochum but was released on September 12. With VfL he had lost the first six games of the season.

And now Schalke. On Sunday (October 30th, 2022) Reis will be on the bench at Schalke 04 for the first time. The opponent is then SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga.

Most recently, interim coach Matthias Kreutzer led Schalke’s training and also sat on the bench during the defeat against Hertha BSC after the club broke away from the club on October 19 Frank Kramer had separated.

Precarious situation for Schalke

However, the search for personnel in Gelsenkirchen does not end there. Schalke announced on Wednesday that sporting director Rouven Schröder had asked for personal reasons to be able to leave the club before his contract expired.

Schalke sports director Peter Knäbel rejected views that Schröder had let down the bottom of the table. “When it comes to Rouven Schröder, the first thing to do is to respect the people and their decisions,” said Knäbel. The club is stable, said Knäbel. “Yesterday wasn’t a day of chaos at Schalke. I vehemently resist this impression,” said the 56-year-old, who will take over Schröder’s duties “for the time being”.

The situation at Schalke is sportingly and financially precarious: After five league bankruptcies in a row, the promoted team has fallen to last place, the team that Schröder had to rebuild again before the season, not least because of major financial problems, mostly lacked Bundesliga suitability. Money for new players is only available in a very limited amount.
