Before the season finale on Saturday, Borussia Dortmund’s managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke emphasized the special importance of a possible ninth German championship.

Before the season finale on Saturday, Borussia Dortmund’s managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke emphasized the special importance of a possible ninth German championship.

“It’s a title for eternity. If you become German champion with BVB, everyone in Dortmund will still know in 30 years who won the title. It’s different than with Bayern Munich, it’s relatively normal there – at least in the perception of the last few years,” said Watzke in the club’s own TV format “Feiertagsmagazin” before the duel with FSV Mainz 05 (3:30 p.m. / Sky).

If they win, BVB would be champions. Second-placed FC Bayern Munich, who are two points behind, will play at 1. FC Köln at the same time. Watzke relies on the special stadium atmosphere and the “great power” that BVB can develop as a club at such moments.

“You feel it crackle, it gives you an incredible amount of motivation. We know that from Borussia Dortmund. There’s a force that’s unfolding now.” At the same time, Watzke also warned: “That’s also a bit of a problem that we have to manage to keep the team focused.”

“Edin knows best how to do this”

Watzke had already committed the BVB professionals to the season finale after the 3-0 win at FC Augsburg and taking the lead in the dressing room. “After the win in Augsburg I said to the lads: we’re so close now. Please focus on this game this week and we’ll pull it through!” The BVB boss is convinced that coach Edin Terzić will also find the right words. “Edin knows best how to do it. He’s also close to the players in terms of age and finds the right tone.”
