More passion, but again no points – Borussia Dortmund missed the hoped-for revenge for the embarrassing 0: 4 in Amsterdam and a big step towards the last sixteen of the Champions League. Handicapped by the questionable red card for defense chief Mats Hummels (29th minute), coach Marco Rose’s team suffered the next setback against the Dutch champions at 1: 3 (1: 0).
After the interim BVB leadership by Marco Reus (37th / foul penalty), Dusan Tadic (72nd), ex-Frankfurt Sebastien Haller (83rd) and former Werderan Davy Klaassen (90th + 3) met in front of 54,820 spectators in the signal Iduna Park on the deserved success of the league leaders, who is already qualified for the round of 16. For Borussia, the upcoming game on November 24th against rivals Sporting Lisbon with equal points will be a kind of final for second place.
Referee decisions fuel the game
Both teams fought a heated duel, to which the English referee Michael Oliver contributed with his decisions. Especially the red card for Hummels heated the minds. The 2014 world champion brought down Antony with a tackle, but hardly hit the high-jumping Ajax professional. The video referee did not want to reverse the decision either.
On the other hand, the VAR intervened in the Dortmund penalty kick. Noussair Mazraoui had actually touched Bellingham while running. But whether it was also the reason for the fall of the Englishman remained questionable. After these two scenes at the latest, there was finally fire in the party.
Red card for Hummels
The fact that it was a completely different game than the lesson in Amsterdam was mainly due to BVB. As requested by coach Marco Rose, the black and yellow appeared more courageous, more aggressive and with a completely different pressing. That had an effect on the Dutch, the otherwise excellent passing game didn’t work as well as in the first leg.
After just 72 seconds, Hummels headed the first chance to take the lead. It was the signal for a strong start in Dortmund. The greatest opportunity to lead was given by Bellingham, who headed past the empty gate. Previously, Thorgan Hazard had just been stopped by Ajax keeper Remko Pasveer. Hazard (13th) and Reus (25th) had other good opportunities before the red card for Hummels created completely new conditions.
Fight outnumbered
With anger in their stomach, BVB continued to look for their chances and was rewarded with Reus’ penalty goal. After conceding the goal, however, the Dutch came up in the majority and ensured a phase before the break in which the BVB back team came under a lot of pressure. The only hope left for the Bundesliga club after the first point in the premier class is the chance to win the Europa League to hibernate internationally.
Paris-born Christopher Nkunku (8th) headed Leipzig in front of 39,794 spectators against his ex-club before the previously fouled André Silva missed a penalty (12th). Georginio Wijnaldum immediately punished: First he scored to equalize (21st), then to take the lead (40th). Dominik Szoboszlai (90 + 2) scored the late equalizer for RB with a penalty kick.
After Lionel Messi’s loss due to injury, PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino brought in Neymar, who was still missing in the first leg, who played alongside Messi’s compatriot Angel di Maria and the recovered Kylian Mbappé and was moderately committed. In the storm, Marsch relied on the sole lead Silva, who had equalized in the first leg.
