Champions League: Atlético Madrid beats Dortmund in the quarter-final first leg

Atlético de Madrid – Borussia Dortmund 2:1 (2:0)

Despite a defeat, Borussia Dortmund can still hope to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2013. The Bundesliga club lost the quarter-final first leg at Atlético Madrid 1:2 (0:2) in the evening. Rodrigo De Paul (4th minute) and Samuel Lino (32nd) gave the Spaniards the lead with their goals in front of 70,000 spectators.

Africa Cup winner Sébastien Haller scored in the 81st minute for Dortmund, who had improved in the second half, keeping BVB’s semi-final hopes alive for the second leg next Tuesday in their home stadium.

It was a special game, especially for Mats Hummels, as he appeared in the black and yellow jersey for the 500th time. But the celebratory player misjudged a Madrilenian counterattack early on, allowing Álvaro Morata (2nd) to have a great chance. Ian Maatsen blocked the ball with a tackle.

At the beginning, Dortmund seemed overwhelmed, the early lead gave the fourth-placed team in the Spanish Primera División even more tailwind. BVB was too often left behind in direct duels, and when building up their own play, a bad pass was often made due to the opposition’s pressure.

The Bundesliga fifth-place team only had their first chance to score in the 35th minute through Karim Adeyemi. Even after the break, Dortmund tried to put more pressure on their opponents with substitute Brandt. After Haller’s goal there were still chances on both sides.

Paris Saint-Germain – FC Barcelona 2:3 (0:1)

FC Barcelona beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 (1-0) and thus had the best chance of reaching the semi-finals Champions League secured. At the start of the game in Paris’ Parc des Princes, PSG put the Catalans under pressure, but there were initially no clear shots from the French – but there were from FC Barcelona. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma unfortunately defended the ball at the feet of Raphinha (37th), who then hit the goal.

After half-time, Paris turned the game around with two goals in three minutes from Ousmane Dembélé (48th) and Vitinha (51st). This was followed by Raphinha’s equalizer (62′). Shortly afterwards, substitute Andreas Christensen (77th) scored the winning goal for FC Barcelona after a corner from German international İlkay Gündoğan.
