What would Bavaria be without France? Without its strong influence, the emergence of the modern Bavarian state in the early 19th century would probably not have worked. Conversely, one can also ask: What would France be without the observant Bavarians? When the French President Charles de Gaulle came to Munich for a state visit 60 years ago, the protocol faced the difficulty of finding a comfortable place to sleep for the almost two meter tall de Gaulle. In their distress, the state government reflected on the country’s monarchical tradition and quickly provided the French with a three-meter-long bed in the Munich residence. The noble part is usually gazed at by tourists. Honor where honor is due.
