CFE treaty: The Duma buries with fanfare what is long dead – Opinion

Conventional arms control, i.e. agreements about the number of tanks, guns, soldiers and all other non-nuclear threats in the world, is out of date in the worst sense of the word. If the Russian parliament, the Duma, now names a date on which it intends to terminate the treaty between the NATO states and the former Warsaw Pact on conventional armaments in Europe (CFE), then this news is only of symbolic value. The CFE treaty has been worth nothing since 2007 because Russia suspended implementation at the time. The same fate befell the successor contract. So the Duma buried with great fanfare what was long dead.
