What reactions can a census trigger? In Dortmund they still remember it well. When the groundsman came to the Westfalenstadion on the morning of May 15, 1987, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Burglars had left a slogan on the lawn: “Boycott and sabotage the census.” Mowing didn’t help against the color. The BVB game against Hamburger SV in the evening was threatened with cancellation. But the groundskeeper and the head of the municipal registration office had an idea that saved the day. They added a “not” to the call for a boycott of the census. Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker joined in the fun and allowed “The Federal President” to be placed in front of it. The roll call was filmed, the game and the TV broadcast were saved.
