Every passenger has probably heard it one way or another.
This information is always included in the safety briefing before a flight.
But why exactly: Do cell phone signals interfere with the aircraft’s on-board instruments and thus pose a safety risk?
How bad would it actually be if we didn’t follow the flight crew’s instructions?
You can rest assured that even if you forget to activate flight mode, the plane will not crash because of you.
In general, “the in-flight communication systems are now so sophisticated that cell phone use does not cause any disruption,” explains Easyjet pilot Chris Foster to the Liverpool Echo.
But why is flight mode mandatory?
On the one hand, the signals from mobile devices could actually cause interference in the pilots’ radio system.
However, according to media reports, it is very unlikely that this will lead to serious problems.
On the other hand, this generally serves the comfort of the passengers. Other passengers may feel disturbed by message noises and ringtones.
On long-haul flights, the flight mode is not a major limitation anyway. Most airlines offer WiFi and a wide entertainment program.
