Who should be the Union’s candidate for chancellor in the federal election? Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Daniel Günther is holding back in the debate. Only one thing is certain for him.

Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) wants to lead his black-green coalition in the northernmost federal state until the end of the legislative period. He was re-elected as Prime Minister in 2022 and signed a contract with 2.9 million Schleswig-Holsteiners, Günther told the dpa. “I would like to fulfill this contract for the entire legislature.”

When it comes to running for chancellor, the Union must avoid the mistakes made before the last federal election, said Günther. The Union will address the issue after the European elections in June. “And I’m sticking exactly to what we agreed on.”

In 2021 there was a duel for the Union’s top candidacy between the then North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister and CDU chairman Armin Laschet and Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU). Ultimately, Laschet became a candidate for chancellor.
