Anti-Semitic slogans and riots at pro-Palestinian demonstrations: As a consequence, the CDU is calling for a stop to the planned reform of citizenship law. “Express naturalization” sends the wrong signals.

In view of the recent anti-Semitic demonstrations in Germany, in which numerous people with a migrant background took part, the CDU has called on the traffic light coalition to stop the planned reform of citizenship law.

“Such a law does not solve a single problem, especially in the current political situation, but only creates new ones” and must be stopped, said CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann to the “Bild” newspaper. “The events of the past few days and weeks have shown that neither citizenship nor the mere acquisition of the German language leads to a corresponding integration into our community of values,” Linnemann continued.

criticism of “Express naturalization”

That’s why, for example, “express naturalization” after three years is “not the right way and sends completely the wrong signals.” Germany already has one of the most liberal citizenship laws in the world, Linnemann said. Naturalization must be at the end of successful integration, not at the beginning.

At the end of August, the federal government decided to reform nationality law. People from abroad who live legally in Germany will now be able to apply for a German passport after just five years. So far, the deadline has usually been eight years. Multinationality should also be generally accepted in the future. The Bundestag still has to approve the law.
