Causes of the flooding: On the “expressway for low pressure areas” – knowledge

Anyone who looks at pictures from northern Germany will see above all: water. In Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony-Anhalt in particular, it rained so much around Christmas that many rivers overflowed their banks and huge areas flooded. And: There is still no end in sight. Because it is expected to continue raining, according to the German Weather Service, at least until Thursday night.

It doesn’t have to rain a lot every single day, says Felix Hütten, deputy head of the SZ knowledge department. “But because it really happens over days, at some point the soil can no longer properly absorb these water masses.” In the podcast he talks about the causes of the current flood situation and urgent tasks for the future.
