Many people land at Stuttgart Airport every day with large travel bags. What’s in the bags often remains a secret. But not when there is a lot of gold at stake.

Two women were caught trying to smuggle at Stuttgart Airport with 104 pieces of gold jewelry in their luggage. The The mother-daughter team had previously gone through the exit for goods that did not require declaration, the main customs office said.

During the subsequent check, they stated several times that they only had cigarettes and clothing with them – so they kept quiet about the dozens of pieces of jewelry. When the luggage was x-rayed, the officers discovered the gold items worth around 14,000 euros on Friday.

The 54-year-old and her 22-year-old daughter then claimed that they had only brought the jewelry to Istanbul to be cleaned. In addition to paying import taxes, they must answer for attempted smuggling.
