Pope Francis has had several appointments canceled for today. The Vatican justified this with a mild flu-like illness in the morning.

The head of the Catholic Church celebrates his 87th birthday next month. The Argentine native has been clearly struggling with his health for some time now. Because of a knee problem, the Pope often sits in a wheelchair. In early summer he had to undergo open abdominal surgery.

Francis – whose real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio – has been in office since March 2013. At that time he succeeded the German Pope Benedict XVI. who unexpectedly resigned for reasons of age. Benedict died in the Vatican at the end of last year at the age of 95.
