The conference hall in which the autumn general meeting of the German Catholic bishops ended on Thursday bears the name of Wilhelm Kempf – the Limburg bishop who got into severe trouble with the Vatican in the early 1970s because he had democratically elected committees in his Diocese wanted to grant more co-determination rights.
