The Addams Family returns for the Netflix series Wednesday. Now there is a first picture of the creepy family.

Later this year, “The Addams Family” will once again be brought to life. Right in the middle: Catherine Zeta-Jones (52) as Matriarch Morticia and Luis Guzmán (65) as Papa Gomez. The streaming provider Netflix now has the first picture of the morbid horror family released, which flickered across TV screens for the first time in 1964. Director eccentric Tim Burton (63) relaunches the classic. Netflix has already confirmed that the first episodes of “Wednesday” will be available in 2022. A first teaser is to be published this week.

The focus of the plot is no longer the family, but the now teenage daughter Wednesday (played by Jenna Ortega, 19). Isaac Ordonez plays her brother Pugsley. Burton himself took the director’s chair on four of the eight episodes planned so far. It is his first commitment to a TV or streaming production. The script for the series was penned by “Smallville” creators Alfred Gough (54) and Miles Millar (55).

The series creators are still keeping a secret about the question of whether and how the bizarre Uncle Fester will be part of the new edition. “We have no comment on Uncle Fester,” Gough said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “Just watch the series.”

Big shoes for Catherine Zeta-Jones

Morticia Addams’ characters first appeared as cartoons in The New Yorker magazine in the 1930s. A series adaptation starring Carolyn Jones (1930-1983) as Morticia ran from 1964 to 1966 and has absolute cult status today. An animated series followed in the 1970s. In 1991, the “Addams Family” gained new popularity through the filming of Barry Sonnenfeld (69). Here, as in the 1993 sequel, Anjelica Huston (71) played the matriarch.

In 1998, a new edition of “The New Addams Family” starring Ellie Harvie (57) was broadcast on TV in 65 episodes. In the same year the film “Addams Family – And the dear relatives” with Daryl Hannah (61) as Morticia and Tim Curry (76) as Gomez was released. The tribe most recently returned to screens in 2019, in an animated version aimed at children. Charlize Theron (47) lent her voice to the female head of the family.
