Catherine Deneuve on display

The Cannes 2021 festival poster with Spike Lee was playful, that of 2022, where we guessed the silhouette of Jim Carrey in The Truman Show, rather abstract. For the 76th edition, the organizers have opted for glamor with Catherine Deneuve, radiant in black and white in front of the lens of Jack Garofalo. The magnificent photo was taken in June 1968 for Paris Match on a pontoon on Pampelonne beach in Saint-Tropez, during the filming of the chamade, by Alain Cavalier, based on the novel by Françoise Sagan. The festival explains in a press release having chosen the actress of beautiful day because she “is an incarnation of cinema, far from conventions and proprieties » : “Catherine Deneuve is what cinema should remember to be: elusive, audacious, irreverent. »

Catherine Corsini’s film compromised

The return will probably not be screened at Cannes. Catherine Corsini’s last film was however part of the short list until last week. But Thierry Frémeaux wanted to know more about “the situation of the work “, before deciding on his possible selection. In question: members of the team denounced acts of harassment on the part of the director, as well as inappropriate gestures on the part of two other members of the team on two actresses. Rarely, the film also saw its aid from the CNC (680,000 euros, according to our information) withdrawn, after a sprain severe » relating to the legislation on the protection of minor actors — the production did not submit a scene of a sexual nature involving minors, a legal obligation, to the approval of the Commission des enfants du spectacle.

After Gabriel Yared last yearit’s Howard Shore’s turn to indulge in a music lesson at Cannes on May 22, author of the soundtrack for 16 of David Cronenberg’s films (including La Mouche, False pretenses, A History of violence). The director of polishes And My king, both passed – successfully – by Cannes, returns to the red carpet with a place of honor, that of the opening film. It will be presented out of competition, to tell the story of Jeanne Vaubernier, daughter of the people embodied by Maïwenn herself, with whom King Louis XV falls madly in love. Scandal at court…

The director’s sixth film will land on the Croisette with a triple sulphurous reputation. Starting with the presence of Johnny Depp in the role of the king, after his highly publicized trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who accused him of domestic violence. In addition to rumors of tension that have swirled since the shooting, Maïwenn has just been sued by Edwy Plenel, president of the Mediapart information site. The journalist has indeed filed a complaint against the director for assault. She would have, without a word, pulled his hair and “sketched” spat in the face in a Parisian restaurant.

Ruben Östlund president of the jury

Announced at the end of February as president of the jury, the Swedish director Ruben Östlund, troublemaker who divides the critics, is part of the very select club of double Palme d’or (for The Square, in 2017, and Without filter, last year), like Francis Ford Coppola, the Dardenne brothers or Ken Loach. The composition of its jury, as well as that of the Un certain regard, Short films, Cinéfondation and Camera d’or juries, should be revealed by the end of April.

Each year, the Cannes Film Festival presents blockbuster-type event films out of competition, such as Top Gun: Maverick in 2022.
