“Cash for Rares” actually focuses on rare objects. But Horst Lichter was more interested in his salesman’s love story.

This guest is right up your alley as an England fan Horst Lichter: Andrew Wakeford lives in Kleinblittersdorf in Saarland, but actually comes from Brighton. Of course the moderator wants to know how he ended up in Germany.

The story that the 74-year-old photographer tells is heartwarming: he came to Germany for the first time in 1971. “I was hitchhiking and a woman from Saarbrücken gave me a lift.” This year the two are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. “That’s nice,” Lichter and expert Wendela Horz exclaim at the same time.

“Cash for Rares”: The dealers increase the price

Wakeford brought a pendant in the shape of a cross with him. It belonged to his wife’s grandmother. As Horz explains, the cross was made of platinum and set with 55 diamonds, including twelve large old-cut diamonds. The work was created in the style of the Belle Époque; the expert dates it to around 1910.

The seller doesn’t want to commit completely to the desired price, but thinks anything over 2000 euros is wonderful. That could even work: Wendela Horz estimates the value to be exactly 2,000 euros. But things are going much better in the dealer room than expected. Susanne Steiger offers the estimated value right at the start, and that’s just the beginning: Julian Schmitz-Avila counters, and soon the price is 3,300 euros. Now David Suppes is joining the race and offering 3,400 euros. In doing so, he has surpassed his competitors and is awarded the diamond-studded cross.

Salesman Wakeford can hardly believe his luck afterwards: “It was unbelievable,” he says beaming.
