The bust of a laughing boy was met with mixed emotions at “Cash for Rares”. While the seller is happy to get rid of them, Horst Lichter reacted in love.

When Horst Lichter opened the expert room of “Cash for Rares” enters and people are already laughing. “I hear there’s a good atmosphere here. Then I can’t be missed,” calls the moderator and welcomes his guests. Marcel and Sonja Abels live practically around the corner in Jülich and turn out to be Rhenish cheerful natures – just like Lichter.

In the ZDF junk show, the couple want to sell a bust with the title “The Laughing Boy”. It belongs to Sonja Abels’ father, who wants to use the proceeds to buy an electric vehicle. His son-in-law has little interest in the heavy bronze bust: “It wouldn’t be for me,” says Marcel Abels.

“Cash for Rares”: Wolfgang Pauritsch is interested

Lichter, on the other hand, is very impressed: “He really looks like he’s having a lot of fun!” he says. “The guy enjoys life.” Bianca Berding also sees it that way: “He’s in a really good mood,” says the expert. The bust was created based on an old model: it comes from the Renaissance artist Desiderio da Settignano, who in the 15th century developed a new form of sculpture that was particularly intended to appeal to children. The bronze replica here comes from the late 19th century. The Abels would like to have 1000 euros as their desired price. Berding even gives hope for more: she estimates the value at 1,100 to 1,300 euros.

The Austrian Wolfgang Pauritsch starts the auction with 200 euros – after all, the original is in the art historical museum Vienna. Walter “Waldi” Lehnertz, Elke Velten-Tönnies and Jos van Katwijk are also taking part. But it doesn’t add up to more than 600 euros. However, Marcel Abels insists on 800 euros. Pauritsch agreed with him for 700 euros, and in the end they reached an amicable agreement on 750 euros.

The desired price is therefore undercut. But at least Sonja Abels’ father gets money – and Marcel has it bust out of sight.
